If visiting Machu Picchu, it is truly a magnificent experience to hike the mountain behind it, Wayna Picchu. Catch one of the earliest buses, because they only let a certain number of people hike it every day. Once the top is reached, after a very treacherous trail, the view is simply one of the most gorgeous I have ever seen. It took me above the clouds, and I could see Machu Picchu below me along with the surrounding mountains.

I was recently at Wayna Picchu and I second this tip! It's really worth it, but can only really be done if you're spending the night before in the base town Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu pueblo. So you have to build that into your schedule. The more adventurous and fit travelers can leave Aguas Calientes at 3:30am and hike up by foot (with flashlight!) to avoid the bus fee and arrive within the first 400 to whom they award tickets. Sometimes they also give tickets for the next day if you go to the hut at the base of Wayna Picchu.
