Haggling for a ride
In Delhi, Rickshaw-wallas are notorious for over-charging. Technically, they’re required by law to take you where you want to go by meter but it’s a minor miracle if you can get someone to switch the thing on and abide by its reading. You can try several strategies to improve your chances of paying a reasonable fare. For one, you can just get in the seat while you’re haggling, insist that the driver take you where you want to go, and act like you know the correct fare. For me, I enjoy humor – I laugh heartily when a driver quotes a price twice as high as it should be. If this strategy works, the driver softens with laughter and quotes me a better fare. If it fails, he goes right on insisting on a ridiculous price and I walk away.
