Need to satisfy your latte craving in Bamako? Don't want to shell out the overpriced tourist price for a mediocre cup of coffee at a fancy french-style restaurant? Stop by any neighborhood street-side fast food stand and ask for instant coffee with sweetened condensed milk. All you have to say is cafe au lait! Your new favorite barista will pour about a finger full of the sweet sticky stuff into the bottom of a glass, add a few teaspoons of Nescafe, mix with hot water and stir. Then, for the finishing touch, they will pour the mixture back and forth between two cups to cool it down, giving your beverage a frothy topping. Delicious, and only about 150 CFA, or 25 cents.
