While backpacking through Playa del Carmen, we realized that most of the shop owners charged extremely high prices for the same goods that could be purchased elsewhere in Central and South America because many of the tourists there wouldn't think to bargain. In one shop, the owner was selling one hammock for 1,800 pesos (about $60), but by the time we had bargained down, he sold us TWO hammocks for 1,800 pesos. It never hurts to bargain, especially because locals try to take advantage of foreigners, and you never know what good deals you may end up with!
