A man readies tobacco for auction in the capital Lilongwe. Tobacco is Malawi's primary cash crop, responsible for 70 to 80 percent of the country’s export earnings—and for employing, directly or indirectly, an equivalent percentage of the population. These floors alone provide work for 3,000 people, though the undisputed stars are the auctioneers. Each has a distinct, lilting refrain—some ululate, some shout, some croon, others nearly yodel.
