Traditional Hmong New Year, with Heels

December 20, 2009 @ 5:09 AM | Permalink

This week, the Hmong in Laos, one of the country's larger ethnic groups, are celebrating their New Year Festival.  The festival, which, in Luang Prabang, takes place in a wooded area near a major road, is a great opportunity for young Hmong to find a mate.  Most people come dressed in their traditional costumes, which represent their different tribes.  Well, more like modern interpretations on traditional outfits, which have been embellished with shiny plastic beads and high-heeled shoes.  When a Hmong boy sees a girl he would like to court, he invites her to toss an orange (or tennis ball) with him.  They stand in opposing lines and flirt as they throw the ball back and forth.  Lao marry very young, but Hmong often marry even younger.

Gabe, When I see you next, can we drink beer with ice, and can we line dance, the whole time twirling our hands? I miss you very much. Love, Mafalda
